Blackmagic URSA mini

Blackmagic once again made massive headlines with the announcement of 3 new cameras at NAB 2015.  Firstly the very impressive blackmagic mini URSA, possibly the most ergonomic camera the’ve ever built. The compact URSA Mini camera with EF lens mount, 4.6K Super 35 sensor and an incredible 15 stops of dynamic range, is lightweight and perfectly balanced for handheld use and comfortable enough for all day shooting. URSA Mini 4.6K EF features professional 12G-SDI connections, 5” fold out touchscreen monitor and side grip with camera control functions as well as dual CFast card recorders, built in stereo microphones and more.  Looks absolutely gorgeous and at £2149 it looks to be an amazing and affordable camera.

Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera

The second camera and my personal favorite is the blackmagic micro.  A digital film camera with Super 16mm sensor and 13 stops of dynamic range that is designed to be operated remotely. Features a revolutionary expansion port with PWM and S.Bus inputs so you can use a model airplane remote control to operate the camera wirelessly. Includes a built in SD card recorder for capturing up to 1080HD in CinemaDNG RAW or ProRes, MFT lens mount and operates up to 60 fps with global shutter up to 30 fps. Very similar to the pocket spec wise, but doesn’t include LCD screen, however it can be accessed  remotely. Perfect for drones and gimbals.

Blackmagic URSA 4.6k

Finally an updated URSA with 4.6K Super 35 image sensor with global shutter and 15 stops of dynamic range. The EF lens mount includes active lens control for compatibility with both active and passive EF mount lenses. URSA EF makes it easy to use a wide range of high quality lenses such as low cost DSLR photo lenses from companies such as Canon, Zeiss and more.

From Grant Petty

We are introducing 2 new models of Blackmagic URSA camera with this 4.6K sensor. The Blackmagic URSA 4.6K EF model will be available for $6,995 and the Blackmagic URSA 4.6K PL will be available for $7,495. Both 4.6K models will initially start with limited availability shipments in June and ramp up to full volume late July and into August.

If you already own an URSA, then you will be able to upgrade to the new 4.6K sensor for $1,995 for the EF lens mount and $2,495 for the PL lens mount. All you will need to do is purchase this “4.6K turret upgrade” and then you can replace the turret on your URSA cameras to get this new higher performance image sensor. This new 4.6K turret upgrade is also gives you the ability to choose between the EF or PL models if you want to change from the mount you currently own.

What’s exciting is we are also reducing the price of the current shipping 4K models of Blackmagic URSA EF and PL cameras by $1,000. This means if you don’t have an URSA, it’s now more affordable than ever. Plus currently the URSA 4.6K EF is the same price as the URSA 4K EF plus the 4.6K Turret Upgrade so that means you can get started at 4K and then upgrade later if you need the extra dynamic range!
